Choosing the right Camera

The Right Camera

For the purpose of displaying your images online, we really do not need a powerful camera. If you are about to buy one for online purposes alone here are some of the features that we do need:

  • Tripod Mountable
  • FlashMacro for Close range Photography
  • Preview
  • Video Mode

The above mentioned features are normally already there in most cameras, no mater how basic. The exception is the video mode, some has reasonable capability, but as things are changing with high demands, in the near future we will see a lot of cameras with DVD video capability. As far as video is concerned, dont worry too much about it, there are not too many places where we demonstrate high quality video online.

Now here are some of the things you will need to avoid while buying a camera.

  • Interpolation
  • Micro Camera
  • Video Camera with image capability

It is fair to say interpolation is an attempted scam. What interpolation does is takes the picture with a 3 or 5 mega pixel sensor, and then enlarges the image using software, and they say the camera is 10 mega pixel (which it is not). I wont say the picture is ruined, but you will never get a 10 mega pixel image when you print. My advice is, skip those cameras, as generally they almost always have other issues with quality. A good manufacturer no matter how humble, does not attempt to mislead.

Micro cameras are every where these days. Your mobile phone, laptop camera, web cam, even watches these days have cameras built in. Those cameras can do for once or twice, but can not be relied on. Generally the colour reproduction and sharpness is an issue with those camera.

Video cameras these days are increasingly becoming more dynamic. Many have very good photo capability, and other just barely make it. The issue is that a video camera with good photo capability (often known as a hybrid camera) generally costs a lot. While the cheaper ones hardly do much good when it comes to taking decent quality pictures. Things are really changing rapidly in this sector, its best to stick to what is simple unless you are sure about what you are getting.

What to pick?

You can pick up an old 3 mega pixel camera and that will amaze you. Remember, we are not after size, we are after quality. Even the smallest in mega pixel will do for us. And as a bonus, they will be cheap as chips, and if you find one used, it would almost cost nothing, as not many people want older cameras so in places like eBay you can pick one up for peanuts. And in doing so you can often experiment with a few different cameras and then decide to stick with the one that worked out best for you.

Pick a good brand of your choice, like Pentax, Olympus, Canon, Nikon, Sony and so on….. Generally they have good imaging sensors, and carry all those little features that we will find handy.

Although, it was a simple camera,
It did the basics right.

The big ones

If you already have a digital SLR camera or something that is similar to that, there is little you need to worry about as far as taking pictures go. Get comfortable with your camera and you are set. I am confidant that any digital SLR out there is capable taking great photos, as artistic as the artis pleases.

A very trusty old camera I had used for as far back as I can remember.
Milolta X-700 Standard SLR with 55m Lens

Other things to concider
Two other thing that needs to be mentioned are a tripod, and a good light source.
